                                                          Annual Meeting 2006
This year’s annual meeting featured Speak Up When You’re Down, Perinatal Mood Disorders, presented by Nicolai Neilsen, MD.  Dr. Neilsen, a recognized psychiatrist, discussed the history of perinatal mood disorders, risk factors that contribute to perinatal mood disorders, and the effects of perinatal mood disorders on infants and children.

Naomi Savitz, Gateway Northwest Co-Director of  Quality Assurance, provided an overview of electronic birth certificate data within Gateway Northwest's eight counties, which she and Co-Director Ruth Brogden analyzed. Most interesting was that in Essex and Passaic counties, while maternal age, marital status and education indicators were similar, race & ethnicity were markedly different. Essex County is primarily black and non-Hispanic, while Passaic County is primarily white and Hispanic. Such data indicate that generalizations about counties or certain demographics should never be made.
